| SUN KIL MOON/MARK KOZELEK |
Wed 10th Sep, 2008 |
|
| Concorde2, 8pm, £12 adv |
| | In early 2002, Mark Kozelek assembled Sun Kil Moon with former Red House Painter Anthony Koutsos, Black Lab bassist Geoff Stanfield, and erstwhile American Music Club drummer Tim Mooney. Their debut LP, Ghosts of the Great Highway, appeared to wide critical acclaim in late 2003, and Kozelek assembled a new touring band to support its release, spending the better part of 2004 on the road. He also continued his film career, again playing a fictional musician in the 2005 big-screen adaptation of Steve Martin's comedic novella -Shopgirl. That summer, Kozelek joined with Low's Alan Sparhawk in the classic-rock cover band the Retribution Gospel Choir, issuing a tour-only EP in advance of the second Sun Kil Moon album, the much maligned Tiny Cities, a collection of covers by indie rock band Modest Mouse. The album was the first released on Kozelek's own Caldo Verde label. April, featuring guest vocals from Will Oldham and Ben Gibbard, followed in 2008. Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide | |

| KILL HANNAH plus guests |
Tue 30th Sep, 2008 |
|
| Concorde 2, 7.30pm, £9 |
| | Until There's Nothing Left of Us" is a pleasing pity party with lustful urgency and an abundance of codependent resentment. Would you expect less from a lead singer who named his band after murderous intentions for his ex-girlfriend? Despite the inconsolable attitude of Kill Hannah's intimate lyrics, the slightly nasal vocals are a far cry from emo whining. The raspy whispers and moaning sighs of the first single, "Lips Like Morphine," induce a similar drug-like trance. |

| SAM SPARRO plus guests |
Fri 3rd Oct, 2008 |
|
| Corn Exchange, 7:30pm, £12 |
| | Sam Sparro is that classic template for an interesting pop star: the misfit who found his way into the mainstream. Too Australian for America, too American for Australia, and too openly gay for both, his peripatetic upbringing was, by all accounts, a solitary one. Suddenly, the United Kingdom has taken him to its heart, and his very-nearly-chart-topping single "Black and Gold" has correctly been hailed as this year's "Hey Ya!" or "Crazy", ie, a unifying soul-pop singalong that the whole world loves. New Single '21st Century Life' out 28th July - Debut Album 'Sam Sparro' Out Now! |

| | CARDIACS - We're always lost for words when we have to try to write a description of Cardiacs. Every contradiction in the world comes into your head. They are utterly, totally unique - which in these days of post- post-ironic irony recycling and tiredness should be enough to make them part of your life. Yes, every band cliché is turned on its head with Cardiacs: don't bands get tired and repetitive after a few years - or at least sell out? Cardiacs are writing stuff that takes our breath away and breaks new ground 23 years after their first, home made single. They write tightly structured, often intricate tracks that make musicians worship them. |

| (Past Event) THOSE DANCING DAYS plus John & Jehn and BangBangBang! |
Mon 2nd Jun, 2008 |
|
| Audio, 8pm, £7 |
| | Sweet as apple-pie pop, from Stockholm high school girls, led by a pounding Hammond organ. These four tracks emulate some of the true twee pop greats such as Bis and Girlfrendo. “Those Dancing Days”, the northern soul inspired song which the band are named after, could easily fit onto the soundtrack of Austin Powers. “Hitten,” possibly the band’s signature tune is a fizzy pop number which will have you singing along instantly. If this band are not the next big thing I am willing to bet my life savings that one of the members of this group will feature on a Top Twenty selling Swedish album within the next five years. Sat 3rd May, 2008 |
|
| Concorde 2, 7pm - Early show!, £11 adv |
| | The Maccabees announce surprise tour of intimate venues to unveil new songs. The Maccabees ended 2007 on a high with a triumphant sold-out date at London’s Roundhouse and great acclaim for their debut album “Colour It In”: Artrocker made it their Album of The Year, Xfm short-listed it for their Debut Album of The Year and NME called it “The best alt.pop record of 2007, no contest”. Not a band to rest on their laurels, The Maccabees headed straight into the studio where they have been crafting songs for their sophomore record. The Brighton boys are eager to road-test the fruits of their labours, and as befits one of the hardest working bands around, have announced a surprise tour of venues significantly smaller than those they have grown used to playing which means a great opportunity for fans to catch The Maccabees in the sweaty confines of the Concorde2. Early Show! Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult. |

They come on like the nastiest electronic band since Suicide, or like the The Fall reworking their brains with screwdrivers, or Add N to (X) playing speed metal. They're the kind of band that could hoof a hangover to kingdome come, or wring the neck of a banal main stage performance". |

Tue 11th Mar, 2008 |

| Komedia (downstairs), 8pm, £10 |
| When your debut single is number one in seven different countries and your album goes on to sell more than 700,000 copies, you get to choose where you record the follow-up. And having made her first album on a miniscule budget in a freezing barn in Cheshire, you might think Sandi Thom would want to go a bit more upmarket this time. But Sandi tends to do things her own way, no matter how unconventional that may be. Which is why she recorded the whole of her second album, ‘The Pink & The Lily’ in the basement of her flat in Tooting.
“I like my own surroundings,” she smiles. “And I like being in control. For me it’s about being comfortable, being able to relax and not be intimidated. In fact I probably did most of my vocals in my pyjamas – I’d get out of bed, make a cup of tea, go downstairs and just do it! And it was great having that freedom.”

Sun 2nd Mar, 2008 |

| Pressure Point, 8pm, £7 |
| | Following in the footsteps of LIFETIME, GORILLA BISCUITS, and SAVES THE DAY, SET YOUR GOALS espouse a brand of positive hardcore punk that has sadly been absent in the music scene in recent years. Recognized as one of the “100 bands you need to know in 2006” by Alternative Press, the band has already gained both respect from critics and ardent fans in their relatively brief career. The band formed in early 2004, as an outlet to play the type of music they loved listening to. From there it grew into what it is now- a dedicated group of guys that have honed their songwriting abilities and are constantly on tour. The band has even persevered and stayed positive despite the theft of their trailer and the rebuilding of their van’s transmission (four times). Over 14s welcome. | |

| Concorde 2, 7pm - Elliot Minor on stage at 8:30pm, £10 adv |
| | Elliot Minor is a five-piece from York whose music is an explosive collision of Rock and Classical. The music is daring and unafraid…Racing pianos, driving guitars, sweeping violins and crashing cymbals harmonize in a symphony of sound, evoking the stories and emotions of frontman, Alex Davies. The songs are arranged around Elliot, the band’s piano, and they are rich with minor and dissonant chords, hence the name, Elliot Minor. |

| (Past Event) *SOLD OUT!* ONE NIGHT ONLY plus Nick Harrison and Cass Lowe |
Thu 31st Jan, 2008 |
|
| Audio, 7pm Early show!, £7.50 |
| Every great band needs its thunderbolt. Y'know, the charismatic rock god guy who joins the band, sacks the crap drummer, brings in a new keyboardist, writes most of their huge hit songs, insists on playing all the guitars and singing and transforms them into a globe slam-dunking rock Atlas. Oasis had Noel. The Clash had Strummer. And One Night Only have George Craig. Shaggy of hair, snarly of lip and with the indie god gene throbbing deep in his marrow, George joined what was, in 2003, a not-entirely-hopeful Beatles covers act from Helmsley, North Yorkshire, made up of older schoolfriends from his secondary school. He insisted on playing guitar and singing. He began writing most of their best songs. He brought in a new keyboard player. Drummer Sam Ford, presumably spotting a pattern emerging here, must have feared a putsch on his stool but was thankfully deemed good enough to survive.
Over 16s welcome. | |

| (Past Event) LO FIDELITY ALLSTARS plus Leon Jean-Marie and Kidda |
Tue 11th Dec, 2007 |
|
| Digital, 8pm, £10 adv |
| Lo Fidelity Allstars are back in action at Digital supporting their collection "Warming up the Brain Farm". Don't miss this opportunity to see your favourite hits performed live. As for the music... "We knew that the music always sounded like the Lo Fi's and that's the bottom line," says Phil. "It's really diverse but it could only be us doing it." Johnny: "Dave leaving opened things up. Suddenly we could think of any voice we wanted and get it on there." The album was steeped in the American tour - watching non-stop hip hop and R&B videos on the tour bus, and picking up dance records in every town - but the more time they spent on it, the wider their horizons became.
The band are currently in the studio working on a new record, ‘Northern Stomp’ which again features collaborations with Greg Dulli.

This simple approach has gained him high profile fans from the likes of Natalie Portman, who picked one of his songs for her iTunes playlist compilation, indie house film maker and writer of the moment Miranda July, as well as appreciation from musicians such as Vetiver, the Akron Family and Nina Nastasia. |

What a year it's been for Brighton, UK quintet ARCHITECTS. Formed in late 2004, the band immediately became hometown heroes; grabbing attention through support slots with Nile and Napalm Death. But it was in May 2006, with the release of their debut album 'Nightmares' via In At The Deep End Records (Gallows, Send More Paramedics) that Architects stepped onto the global map.
With a year of touring activity already locked in, including a performance at the prestigious Download Festival in June 2007, and armed with one of the best UK metal albums of the year, Architects aren't about to let up even an inch in their quest to take over your world. |
